Updating Your Countertops: What You Should Know

by Lillian Bishop

When you have lived in your home for a while, the time eventually comes to make some changes and updates to your living space. When you walk into your bathroom every day, you can't help but notice the plain, boring countertops that your home came with. While standard white countertops are all well and good when you first buy your home, you eventually want something with a little more class and character. So, get to know the various options for updating your bathroom countertops and get to work making your home more your own.

Paint Your Countertops

If you are not financially capable of replacing your countertops entirely, you may wonder if there is anything than you can do to update your countertops. Luckily, there is something you can do to update your countertops without spending a great deal of money.

Painting your countertops may seem like a difficult undertaking, but it does not have to be. If you purchase a kit, you can paint your countertops to look exactly like real granite countertops. The kit comes complete with three tones of paint, and sponges to get the right granite appearance for your countertops.

All you need to do is tape around the edges of your counters and begin by applying primer. The primer will be black, which may come as a surprise, but do not panic. Once the primer is dry, you can begin applying the colors for your granite countertops, starting with the two lightest colors first.

These are your base colors that you will use the most. The darkest color is the accent color and will be used sparingly to complete the design. Continue to sponge on the paint until you achieve your ideal effect.

Install Marble Or Granite Countertops

While painting your plain countertops to look like more expensive stonework can be a good solution for the homeowner on a budget, it is never going to be exactly the same as the real thing. So, if you are ready to take the plunge into new countertops, you can't do any better than granite or marble.

Marble or granite countertops are the best possible options for countertop materials. They are strong, durable, and come in a variety of colors and styles. These stone countertops will not only add class and elegance to your bathrooms, but will also add value to your home if you ever want to resell it.

Granite and marble are heavy stones, so be sure to hire a contractor to help you install the countertops properly. That way you will be sure that your cabinetry and counters are sufficiently strong to withstand the weight of the marble or granite countertops you install.

Updating your countertops can range from a simple paint job to an entire countertop replacement. All you need to do is decide what you are willing to spend and the effort you would like to put into the project, and get started as soon as possible.

About Me

Creating a Quick Home Sale

One of the things that helped sell my home quickly, at least according to my real estate agent, was the time I spent fixing up the landscaping. I knew about the importance of eye appeal, but who would have thought that something as simple as a storage shed or a backyard veggie garden could make such a big difference in the sale price of a home, and the length of time it takes to sell said home? Well to prove that my landscaping techniques worked, I helped three friends sell their homes using some of my tips and tricks. It seems to have worked, because every one of them were able to fetch their asking price and sell before their goal deadlines. So, I figured I should help others out there who could use a little help in the home selling department… hopefully you'll find inspiration on the pages here.
